LivMS Event: * *Date:* 08 Nov, 2023 * *Time:* 17:00 * *Presenter:* Rachel Bearon * *Title:* The maths of micro-swimmers * *Audience:* Year 11 up, their teachers and anyone interested in mathematics * *Venue:* Lecture Theatre B, Central Teaching Hub (first floor), University of Liverpool and live-streamed * *Contact:* Peter Giblin pjgiblin@liv.ac.uk * *Registration:* Via [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-maths-of-micro-swimmers-tickets-706639777597?aff=oddtdtcreator) IMG:RachelBearon2.jpg ---- Classical models of fluid dynamics can describe the physics of how micro-swimmers will move in fluids. We can write this down as mathematical equations which describe how the position and orientation of micro-swimmers changes over time, and also include randomness in the description. These equations can be solved numerically and analysed mathematically so as to make predictions that are relevant in a wide variety of ecological & medical settings – from the distribution of phytoplankton in the water-column to the early stage formation of bacterial biofilms.
