LivMS Event: * *Date:* 04 Nov, 2015 * *Time:* 17:00 to 19:00 * *Presenter:* Lisa Baggaley and Sue Harkness * *Title:* Bar Modelling to support Mathematical Understanding * *Audience:* CPD, Primary and Secondary teachers * *Venue:* Liverpool Hope University * *Contact:* Fiona Gustard mailto:gustarf@hope.ac.uk ---- ! ~CPD session for primary teachers with Lisa Baggaley mailto:lisa.baggaley@si.liverpool.gov.uk _ The bar model can support children to develop conceptual understanding of ~mathematics as it involves using concrete apparatus and pictorial images to represent a problem and helps them to explain their thinking and visualise how to solve it. _ This session aims to explore how we can use the bar modelling approach to support problem solving and mathematical understanding across the primary age ~range. ! ~CPD session for ~secondary teachers with ~Sue Harkness mailto:sharkness.55@gmail.com _ The new GCSE places more emphasis on proportional reasoning. Many students find fractions decimals percentages and ratio baffling. The bar modelling gives students a visual model as an entry point to these topics helping them to understand what they are tying to find and how to go about finding it. These often get clouded when ~algorithms for solving these problems are introduced too early. _ This session aims to explore how we can use the bar modelling approach to support problem solving and mathematical understanding with the emphasis on developing proportional reasoning skills. | IMG:Bar_Mod_2.jpg | | IMG:Bar_Mod_3.jpg | ! Both sessions _ *Aims:* * To develop an understanding of the Singapore bar modelling approach to problem solving _ * To consider how bar modelling can bridge the gap between concrete mathematical experiences and abstract representations ! Cost: £50 per teacher. Additional teachers at the same school £25 each. Students free. _ There are discounts available (see below) for institutional members of the Liverpool Mathematical Society !! !# *To*apply*for*places*please*complete*and*submit*the*online*web*form*here:* !! !# https://secure.jotformeu.com/form/52582173495361/ !!
