LivMS Event:

Over the last 5000 years there have been many important institutions in the history of the teaching of mathematics, many of which are lost to history but some of which are not just known of but even still in existence. Many already know of Plato’s Academy (from which those ignorant of geometry may or may not have been barred entry), and the “school” of Pythagoras. Since then, mathematics has been taught in different ways in different places and we’ll be looking at some of these schools and typical problems and puzzles that a student might have encountered in them, whether it be in ancient Greece, Mediaeval China, or more recently in Russia and eastern Europe.
