Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni al-Khwarizmi (973-1048AD). Regarded by some as one of the greatest Islamic scholars.

Devised a method of measuring the size of the Earth from a single location, rather than having to measure celestial angles from two (or more) different locations simultaneously.
