A "Fractal" is something that's self-similar (explain later) or "crinkly" in a technical sense. Non-technically, self-similar means that if an increasingly powerful microscope is used to view the fractal set, then more and more near-identical copies of the whole set are seen, however great the magnification. Have a look at the page on Basin of Attraction, the Cantor Set or the Dragon Curve to see examples. Probably want to mention the Mandelbrot set and Julia set. Probably also want to mention the usual definition: a fractal is something whose Hausdorff dimension is bigger than its topological dimension.
