A "Fractal" is something that's self-similar (explain later) or "crinkly" in a technical sense.

Non-technically, self-similar means that if an increasingly powerful microscope is used to view the fractal set, then more and more near-identical copies of the whole set are seen, however great the magnification.

Probably want to mention the Mandelbrot set and Julia set.

Probably also want to mention the usual definition: a fractal is something whose Hausdorff dimension is bigger than its topological dimension.
